Proverb: The Broken Man in the Desert
A hiker fell from a cliff, dislocating his arm and breaking his leg. After crawling for four days and nights in desserts without protective gear, he managed to attract the attention of a rescue helicopter.
A news anchor asked him how a man could crawl for five miles and not give up. “I just picked a point in front of me and crawled until I reached it. Then, after I was there, I picked another point and crawled until I reached it.”
Is writing much different? You don’t have to be perfect to write. Rather, the broken are the perfect ones to be writing. Just pick a word count, a number of queries, a small goal, a point in the distance and scrape and crawl your way on bleeding elbows until you reach your goal. Then do it again and again every day…. there is life in writing, it’s out there. You just have to want it like a broken man in a desert.
